El Marba is a desert kingdom on the eastern edge of the Urgol Desert. Although it is possible the Marbians would disagree as to what actually constitutes the desert’s edge. They are a people of flowing clothing and pale open buildings. Every aspect of their lives focuses on surviving heat and finding water. They are adept at both and, as evidence, their kingdom penetrates far into the Urgol, well into conditions another people would not survive. The first hints of the kingdom are pockets of people around oases and the roaming tribes who travel between them. Western traders often find out they have crossed the border only when told so by warriors on camelback with swords.
The people of El Marba are as loosely defned as its borders. While individual tribes are cohesive, distinct, and proud, the group of tribes is more diverse. Tribes of humans, desert orcs, sandfolk, and elves all call themselves Marbians. In theory, they each owe their allegiance to the Sultan in Ghin but their loyalty is loose and shifting. Despite the common ruler and the power claimed by the Sultan, El Marba has more in common with the political structure of the 100 Kingdoms than the more centralized political entities like Valera or Ladevieux.
El Marba’s closest western neighbors are Kolos Jamorda and Ladevieux, although both lie on the far side of the Urgol Desert. To the east, Kytan and Anzani wage their ancient war. El Marba has remained out of that conflict largely by being a place no one else wants to live, one whose most precious resource is water rather than gold or iron.
